"This artwork centers on the semaa (sacred tobacco) plant, from its roots to its pink blossoms, symbolizing holistic healing in Anishinaabe teachings. As the First Medicine and a sacred gift from the Creator, semaa connects earth and sky, body and spirit, and is offered first in all protocols to express gratitude and respect. Surrounding the plant, smudge smoke forms the shape of a brain, representing mental health and the importance of caring for our thoughts alongside our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. Together, these elements honour Indigenous knowledge and create a welcoming, culturally safe space that respects tradition while supporting holistic mental health care and encouraging connection to community-based cultural resources."
